Rio Muchacho, Eco-farm

The Organic farm Rio Muchacho was a fantastic experience. From the beginning we had wanted to spend some time at an eco-farm or lodge and this has lived up to our expectations. In the farm, there were the workers, the volunteers, people taking a course in Permaculture and the tourists. It was very interesting meeting everyone. As part of our stay there we have helped with the animals and the garden (picking vegetables for own lunch), and made cheese, yuca cake, coffee, chocolate and cake from the bean, as well as several pieces of jewellery from beans. The best thing was horse riding to the forest where howler monkeys live. We were lucky enough to see them up close, right above us, including a very cute baby clinging to the mothers back. By the end our day riding, we felt quite comfortable on the horses and even raced each other back to the pen! Another good thing is that Rio Muchacho is very close to Canoa so, afterwards, we went back to the beach!

La Finca Orgánica Río Muchacho también fue una experiencia fantástica. Desde el principio de nuestro viaje, habíamos querido pasar algún tiempo en una granja ecológica y esta ha cumplido todas las expectativas. En la granja viven los trabajadores, los voluntarios, varias personas que estaban haciendo un curso de permacultura y los turistas. Fue muy interesante conocer a tanta gente diferente. Como parte de nuestra estadía para conocer la vida de la granja, hemos ayudado con los animales, la huerta (recogiendo las verduras para nuestra comida), y hemos hecho queso, pastel de yuca, chocolate y café (de la semilla a la taza), además de varias joyas hechas de semillas. La mejor experiencia fue el paseo a caballo a un bosque cercano donde viven monos aulladores. Tuvimos suerte porque llegamos a verlos de cerca. Vimos una familia, con bebe incluido, que se agarraba a la espalda de la mama. Al final del paseo no sentíamos bastantes seguros con los caballos, y hasta hicimos una carrera para ver quien llegaba primero de vuelto a la granja. Lo bueno es que la granja esta muy cerca de Canoa y después de la experiencia, pudimos volver a la playa por unos días!

Canoa, a second time!

For our last two weeks in Ecuador (and South America) we decided to do a little bit of everything! Beach? Yes, we went back to the tranquil small town of Canoa (previous blog entry). Countryside? We spent four days in the Organic Farm Rio Muchacho. Beautiful, colonial city? We are now in historical Cuenca, one of the most beautiful cities of Ecuador. Crazy coastal bigger city? We are flying from Guayaquil, the biggest city in Ecuador, and so we plan to spend a couple of days visiting some of its nicer areas!

Canoa has been, as always, a perfect place to relax. Beautiful beaches, the right amount of tourists, good ceviche restaurants, a nice hostel filled with hammocks and an incredibly relaxed vibe… what else could we ask for? Although it’s the end of the winter here, we have had a couple of very sunny days. We stayed in our favourite hostel in Canoa, Olmito. Last time we were here, we became friends with the manager, Araceli. She is so nice and relaxed, and she makes Olmito an even better place to stay. Un-expectantly and very touchingly she gave us each a present when we left. We’ll miss this place!

Para nuestras dos últimas semanas en Ecuador (y en Sudamérica!) decidimos hacer un poco de todo. Veamos. Playita? Volvimos a Canoa (link), que es sin ninguna duda uno de los lugares mas relajantes y agradables del mundo. Vida en el campo? Pasamos cuatro días en la Granja orgánica Río Muchacho. Bella ciudad colonial? Ahora mismo estamos en Cuenca, una de las ciudades más bonitas de Ecuador. Ciudad grande y alocada en la costa? Nuestro vuelo a España sale de Guayaquil, así que planeamos pasar un par de días explorando las partes más bonitas de la ciudad.

Canoa, por supuesto, ha sido el lugar perfecto para relajarnos. Preciosas playas, la cantidad justa de turistas, restaurantes con buen ceviche, un hostel fantástico lleno de hamacas… que mas se puede pedir? Aunque es el final del invierno, hemos tenido un par de días de sol para relajarnos en la playa. Nos quedamos en nuestro hostel favorito, Olmito. La última vez que estuvimos en Canoa, nos hicimos amigos de la dueña, Araceli. Es muy simpática y tranquila, y hace que Olmito sea un lugar fantástico. No nos lo esperábamos, pero nos hizo unos regalos de despedida, lo que nos emociono. Vamos a extrañar mucho este lugar!
