Oswaldo Guayasamin is probably the most famous Ecuadorian artist. We had seen many reproductions of his work around Quito and the rest of Ecuador so were curious. We visited his most important masterpiece: The Chapel of Man. It´s a building designed by the artist himself, where he wanted to create a temple for mankind (there are so many temples for God, he said, and not a single one for mankind). In here, you can see many of his masterpieces centered around the theme: What man is doing to himself, wars, poverty, racism, and also, hope for the future, for a new and better era.

His works are very powerful, and we were touched by the meaning of many of them, indigenous marginalization in South America, the exploitation of people and natural resources in the mines of Potosi, Bolivia, the Spanish civil war, the Second World War. All expressed in his very recognizable style.

This is one of the most interesting and touching places we have visited in South America… such much that we left with an original print by Guayasamin!!! Sometimes, having a credit card is not such a good idea!
